Wilkes-Barre volleyball taken down by Penn State York

On Monday, Oct. 16, Penn State Wilkes-Barre women's volleyball team played on their home court against the number one seed in the playoffs, Penn State York. The Lady Lions were hoping to get a win against the team after falling to York on Sept. 27.

After their weekend win, where the women played their Pink Out match for Breast Cancer Awareness against Penn State Lehigh Valley and won, they were ready to face whatever challenges came their way.

#15 freshman Jazmyne Bates was quick to act, saving multiple hits from reaching the floor. Players directly in front faced strong opposition from the other side but put up good defense when staring down any difficult plays at the net.

Multiple players put their powerful spiking skills to the test, earning a few kills for the team. At the end of the first set, the score was 25-10 York.

Getting into their groove and knowing the skill set they were up against, the Lady Lions set up for their second set. #9 freshman Brianna Whitaker showed incredible range by trying to save a pass with her feet. #3 freshman Ella Fleschut made a dive to the floor and successfully saved the ball in quick response to a spike against York. By the end of the set, the score was 25-11 York.

In the final set of the evening, Wilkes-Barre showed tenacity by slowing inching their way up on the scoreboard. In the first few minutes, Wilkes-Barre managed to have a 5-4 score against their opposition. Throughout the rest of the set, there were multiple times where the Lady Lions were tied with York, building their confidence for the next serve.

#22 freshman Sarah Watkins powered the ball over the net, where York couldn't react in time. #7 sophomore Sierra Hildebrand made her fair share of spikes over the net, almost untouchable by York's back line.

At the end of the third set, the score was 25-16 York. The team plays their next match on Oct. 19 at home against Penn State Schuylkill at 7 p.m.
