Men’s basketball prepares for game against D1 Norfolk State

On Monday, Nov. 6, Penn State Wilkes-Barre men's basketball team will kick off their third game of the season by traveling to Norfolk State. The D1 school is a competitor the team has faced before, and both players and coaches are preparing for what is sure to be an exciting matchup.

Before battling Norfolk State, the team played two games thus far this season, one of which they won against SUNY Broome on Wednesday, Nov. 1, with a final score of 68-63.

Head Coach LeShawn Hammett says the team will treat the Norfolk State game the same as any other. "We won't do anything different as a staff. We will prepare our players and have them go out and execute the game plan while also trying to our coach the opposing coaching staff."

Hammett is no stranger to Norfolk, as his team has played them in the past. His thoughts on playing them this year are that they are a top mid major in the country. "We will play against top talent; it's a measuring stick for the players and the coaches because we'll be faced by a great team," said Hammett.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre had a remarkable season last year, becoming National Champions in early 2023. With some returning players and new recruits, Coach Hammett is excited to see how far they go, especially when competing against highly ranked schools like Norfolk.

Senior Jalen Willis, a returning player, stated, "Our team has worked hard to become better. Everyone is going to play us a lot harder this year because we are the No. 1 team." Although the game is going to be a challenge, Willis is excited for the chance to compete, never having played against Norfolk State before.

New recruit Elijah Perez explained that the game is Norfolk State's home opener, so the gym is going to be full of activity. He will be focused on having good control amidst all the excitement and newness. Although he's playing on a new team, his thoughts are positive. "As a transfer, you will feel anxious because it is your first time playing with a new team, so staying composed and playing your best is the focus."

Coach Hammett and the team go into the season hoping to repeat last season and capture another national championship title.

We wish the Mountain Lions luck on the road to a great season.
