Pink secures win for Lady Lions against Greater Allegheny

On Saturday, Jan. 13, the Penn State Wilkes-Barre women's basketball team played Penn State Greater Allegheny at 1 p.m. on their home court. #0 junior Tanae Arnold (West Hartford, Connecticut/Monroe College) started the scoring with a jump shot, putting two points on the board. 

With half of the first quarter finished, the Lady Lions were only three points behind Greater Allegheny. When #24 junior Aysia Pink (Albany, New York/Monroe College) sank a three-point shot, the opposition called a time out. 

With one last rush at the basket, #22 sophomore Hannah Cook (Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania/G.A.R. Memorial High School) made at three pointer at the buzzer. The score at the end of the first quarter was 23-20 Greater Allegheny. 

To start off the scoring of the second quarter, Aysia Pink made another three-point shot. Scoring was close throughout, the Lady Lions evenly matched against Greater Allegheny. A trifecta came when Tanae Arnold got a defensive rebound and passed it to #10 freshman Charleigh Miner (Shickshinny, Pennsylvania/Northwest High School), who then passed to #15 freshman Haylie Oliphant (Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania/Wyoming Valley West High School), finishing with a layup. 

The score was 34-34 with four minutes left in the second quarter, but Greater Allegheny pulled ahead with a score of 38-34.

In the third quarter, #11 junior Jaidyn Kotch (Nanticoke, Pennsylvania/Nanticoke High School) made three layups in a row, though Wilkes-Barre still trailed behind. At the end of the quarter, the score was 52-46 Greater Allegheny. 

The final quarter of the game gave the Lady Lions the opportunity to overcome the point gap between their opponents. Points scoring was at a standstill for more than three minutes, until Greater Allegheny broke away at 6:57 with a point made from a free throw. 

Greater Allegheny was still ahead with the minutes dwindling, but Aysia Pink shut them down with eight seconds left on the clock, making the score 66-65 from a three-point shot. Tanae Arnold made two points off free throws after, resulting in a final score of 68-65 Wilkes-Barre. 

Top points scorers of the game were Aysia Pink with 25, Jaidyn Kotch with 8, and Hannah Cook with 8. The Lady Lions play their next game at home on Saturday, Jan. 20, against Penn State Mont Alto at 2 p.m.
