Lady Lions fall just short of defeating Penn State Schuylkill

On Tuesday, Jan. 30, the Penn State Wilkes-Barre women's basketball team played Penn State Schuylkill at home at 6 p.m. The first two points of the game and for the Lady Lions were made by #0 junior Tanae Arnold (West Hartford, Connecticut/Monroe College). 

Although scoring started off slow in the first quarter, Arnold scored again after getting the AND1 and sinking her free throw shot. #10 freshman Charleigh Miner (Shickshinny, Pennsylvania/Northwest High School) followed with a three-pointer. 

Tanae Arnold's momentum remained, earning two more points on a jump shot. #11 junior Jaidyn Kotch put points on the board after making a three-point shot, and #22 sophomore Hannah Cook rounded off the scoring by getting an AND1. 

By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Lions were  tied with Penn State Schuylkill 15-15. 

The second quarter consisted almost entirely of three-point shots, #3 sophomore Inayah Muhammad (Union, New Jersey/Union High School) being the first to score. A total of 15 points were made from the three-point arc. 

By the end of the second quarter, the score was 33-32 Schuylkill. 

After halftime, scoring was low for the Lady Lions. Hannah Cook got the AND1, and Tanae Arnold made a layup. Cook rounded out the scoring in the quarter with a steal and layup at the net. 

The score at the end of the third quarter was 51-38 Schuylkill. 

In the fourth quarter, Wilkes-Barre made a comeback, closing the point gap with ease. Hannah Cook contributed to many of the points while on the court, including one steal that went uncontested by Schuylkill, resulting in a layup. 

#15 freshman Haylie Oliphant (Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania/Wyoming Valley West High School) was the last to score for the Lady Lions, using a pass by one of her teammates to make a layup. 

Only two points behind, the final score was 59-57 Schuylkill. Top points scorers of the game were Tanae Arnold with 16, Hannah Cook with 15, and Inayah Muhammad with 6. 

The Lady Lions play their next game against Penn State Brandywine at home on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 1:00 p.m.
