Brandywine Takes First Two Games From Wilkes-Barre

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine outscored Penn State Wilkes-Barre 20-1 as the Lions claimed the first two games of a four-game Penn State University Athletic Conference baseball series Thursday night at Maple Zone, winning by scores of 11-1 and 9-0.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 11, Penn State Wilkes-Barre 1

Brandywine errupted for eight runs during the final two innings to run away with an 11-1 triumph in the opener.

A balk that allowed Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) to score and a sacrifice fly from Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) staked the Lions to a 2-0 edge through one inning.

Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) reached via error and scored on Sam Benvignati's (Aston, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) double in the third before Brandywine put the game out of reach with five more runs in the fourth.

Abegg recorded a two-run single and Baughman followed with an RBI base hit before Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) capped the inning with his second home run of the spring, a two-run shot.

Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) lifted a sacrifice fly and two batters later, Snyder added a two-run single to close out the scoring in the fifth.

Snyder posted three of Brandywine's eight hits, while Abegg scored three times and drove in two runs. Snyder, Baughman and DeGirolamo also posted two RBI.

Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) was the winning pitcher for the fifth time this spring. Thompson worked five innings, striking out eight, while allowing one run on seven hits.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 9, Penn State Wilkes-Barre 0

Jaylen Bryant (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Telecommunications) spun a three-hit shutout as Brandywine completed the doubleheader sweep with a 9-0 victory in game two.

Bryant scattered three hits and fanned eight batters to claim his second win of the spring.

After a groundout from Snyder scored Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) with the game's first run in the third inning, Brandywine exploded for six fourth-inning markers. Abegg, Skeans and Snyder all delivered run-scoring singles during the fourth inning, while Benvignati plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

Webb put an exclaimation point on the victory by blasting a long, two-run home during during the fifth inning.

Webb recorded two hits, two RBI, scored three times and stole a bag, while Skeans crossed home twice and Snyder drove in two runs.

Brandywine (9-8, 4-2 PSUAC) and Wilkes-Barre wrap up the series Friday afternoon beginning at 2:00 PM.
