Women's Basketball Loses Close Matchup to Penn State Wilkes-Barre

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, PA. - Jasmine Wright was honored for senior night as Penn State Schuylkill fell to PSUAC opponent Penn State Wilkes-Barre in a closely contested matchup.

With the score 9-8 in favor of Wilkes-Barre following a basket by Jasmine Wright (Sicklerville, NJ / Winslow Township High School), the team went on an 8-0 run to gain separation with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter. Schuylkill promptly responded, embarking on a run of their own and ultimately tying the game at 17 following consecutive baskets by Serena Jones (Tamaqua, PA / Tamaqua High School). A made jump shot by Monet Edwards (Philadelphia, PA / Swenson Arts and Technology High School) with seconds remaining in the quarter capped an 11-1 run for Schuylkill, giving them an 18-17 edge heading into the second quarter.

Wilkes-Barre began the second quarter with a 9-0 run, giving them a 27-19 advantage with 6:28 remaining in the half. The momentum continued to swing as the game progressed, with five unanswered points by Schuylkill making it a one-possession contest a minute later. Schuylkill entered halftime trailing 30-26.

Wright showcased her dominance during the third quarter, scoring on three consecutive possessions for Schuylkill to even the score at 32 with 7:31 remaining. Both teams traded baskets throughout the period, with Schuylkill coming out on top, holding a two-point lead heading into the fourth following a late basket by Wright.

A three-pointer by Edwards and a made jumper by Jones gave Schuylkill a 51-50 lead with 2:25 remaining. Wilkes-Barre reclaimed the lead with 1:46 remaining in the contest and was able to hold on to it for the remainder of regulation.

Wright led Schuylkill with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Jones and Allison Crockett (Liverpool, PA / Greenwood High School) dropped 10 points and 8 rebounds each as Crockett added 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks to her stat line. Edwards scored 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds off the bench.

Schuylkill completed the 2023-2024 regular season with a 13-17 overall record and a 7-12 record in the PSUAC. Schuylkill enters the PSUAC playoffs as the #4 seed and will travel to #1 seed Penn State Lehigh Valley on Monday, February 26th. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
