Penn State Baseball Takes Historic Trip

Your Penn State Lions Baseball Team coached by Mike Tierney are taking their first ever trip to The Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach for Spring Training from March 3rd to March 8th. The team will play 5 games total against tough USCAA and NCAA DIII opponents.

Head Coach Mike Tierney is in his 3rd season as the Head Coach of the baseball team and will surely have the team fired up and ready to go. The team finished 12-7-1 overall last season and 10-4-1 in conference. The team will be looking to improve on this impressive record in the upcoming season.

One of the returning players to Penn State Wilkes Barre will be Richard Zach Scott. Scott is a sophomore who had a phenomenal year last season. Scott was 1st in the conference in stolen bases and runs scored, 3rd in the conference in both hits and hit by pitch. He was also 4th in batting average and 5th in on base percentage. These stellar numbers are what helped Scott earn 1st Team All-Conference honors last season.

Also returning to the team is pitcher Jordan Choman. Choman is a sophomore who finished last season with the 3rd most appearances in conference, 6th lowest earned run average in the conference and 8th most strikeouts and innings pitched in conference. After this impressive season Choman is looking to have another extraordinary season.

The team will also be looking to their lone senior, David Staskiel, for leadership this upcoming season. As the most experienced player on the team this season Staskiel will look to lead this young team to a successful season. Staskiel had an eyepopping .483 batting average his sophomore season. Last season Staskiel had another solid year batting .348 with 13 runs scored in 19 games.

Also returning to the team this season are starters Leroy Fettig, Brian Hardiman and Tanner Williams. All 3 were freshman last season and are looking to breakout in their sophomore season. All 3 also played in all 19 games last season which is a tremendous feat as freshmen. Fettig hit .404 last season which was good for 3rd on the team, he also had an on base percentage of .493 which was second on the team. Williams was 6th on the team in hitting with a .306 batting average, he was also 2nd on the team in runs batted in with 17.
